The Alzheimer’s Disease Center recently concluded a study to determine whether bad habits like smoking, avoiding exercise, eating junk food, and excessive drinking affected the brain. The results revealed that not only do these bad habits degenerate cognitive function, they actually shrink the brain.

Participants of this study were put through a series of tests that included measures for obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

After seven years, scientists found that all four factors showed a decline in decision making, planning, organizing, paying attention, and memory.

Researchers believe that these factors could decrease the brain size in the general population more dramatically than in the study participants because they were all generally healthy individuals.

It is known that smoking and obesity are bad for your health but the revelation that they degenerate cognitive function and more shocking, shrink your brain just adds another reason why we all need to get our bad habits under control.
