Male Brain versus Female Brain
Working with Ron has encouraged me to test my own memory skills and has overall brought forth a curiosity about the brain. I am excited to learn about the brain’s structure and its inner workings.
I recently read an article about the differences between the male and female brains and I learned that even before male and female sex organs develop in the womb, our different brains start to diverge.
Here are some interesting facts.
• On average, men’s brains are 8%-10% larger than female brains. They are also packed with more nerve cells. Women’s brains have more space for neurons allowing them to make more connections.
• Here is an obvious one. Women’s brains mature sooner than men’s. A female’s brain reaches its maximum volume at age 10 while males lag behind by four years reaching maximum volume at age 14.
• Girls are generally better linguists than boys. There are two key language centers in the brain that are larger in a woman’s brain than in a man’s brain
• There is anatomical support however, that boy are better at math. A section in the brain that is linked to mental arrhythmic abilities is larger in the male brain.
• In women, pain signals are processed in the areas of the brain that deal with emotion. The male brain processes pain through more analytical regions.
Of course these physiological differences don’t dictate what an individual will achieve and learn. Anyone can become proficient in math or language. Ultimately, we are each responsible for what we will achieve.
